Church History

The date of the first Church on this site is unknown, but records exist dating back to 1239. Possibly the only remains above ground of that date are the arches at the base of the towers which were incorporated into the later structure. By the 15th Century, St. George's had become a church worth seeing. In 1822 the church was pulled down and rebuilt. The new Church, opened by 1827, was described as 'cold, staring, barn like and bare, thinly sprinkled with worshippers'. It was replaced and reopened in 1872. The tower, built with pink sandstone, is well proportioned and handsomely decorated at the top. It is one of a group of a few towers built in about 1487, small but second to none in the County for beauty and detail.
