St. Mary the Virgin Church, is situated in the small village of Portbury, close to the M5 at junction 19.
The church dates from the early 12th Century and is remarkable due to the number of elderly yew trees in the surrounding graveyard. The oldest is reputed to be 2000 years old. The Church was extensively renovated in the 19th Century when a cast iron heating system was installed, and is of great interest historically, having a Norman doorway, nave and chancel, aisles and font. The Sanctuary bell and bell cot are 15th Century as is the screen across the tower arch.
The latest work was completed only 3 years ago when a toilet and kitchen were installed. A sound system was installed in 2000.
